Today is my second day of jury duty. I'm loving it. It's fascinating. Even though my dad is a judge I really have no idea what he did all day since he never talked about it. I remember coloring in the back of the court room when I was little and hiding in all judge's robes in the judge's chambers, but that's about it.
Yesterday I was summoned to Kings County Superior Court in Brooklyn. The day started out in a giant juror corral with about 200 other people, maybe 300, and we watched a movie called "Jury Duty in New York State" starring Ed Bradley and Diane Sawyer. It had a great dramatic reenactment of people being thrown in the water to see if they float or not and hence are guilty or not guilty. I think it was supposed to be the 1600's but they had plastic ponchos on. This was to make us appreciate that we now have trial by jury. These two guys in front of me were speaking Polish and the woman next to them told them to be quiet and one of the guys said "It is impossible to hear. You cannot hear," as he gestured to the tv screens, so some other guy piped in "If you stop talking you'll be able to hear it!" That shut them up.
After the movie the question was posed that if you felt you could not understand English well enough to serve jury duty to form a line against the front wall and walk into some other room, so that took care of about a quarter of the room. Then we had to just sit around and wait for our name to be called. Mine was called fairly quickly and I was led through a laybrinth with 8 other people to a windowless courtroom where we were questioned by the attorneys. I got picked for the case, but if you weren't you were sent back to the jury corral to start all over. I don't think I can write anything else about it until the case is over.
