Last night we went out for Ethiopian food at Awash for our friend Andy's birthday. The food is mushy and served on communal plates and you scoop it up with pieces of spongey, pancake-y bread instead of using utensils. George and I ordered our own food in different bowls since most people were ordering meat dishes, but when the waitress brought our food she dumped it into the middle of the two communal plates. A slo-mo "Noooooo" was going through my head as I watched her do it; I couldn't stop her in time. The bread was really gross after awhile. It was cold and kind of tangy and sour tasting. I had Ethiopian beer for the first time. It was called "Addis" and was real hoppy. (Turns out it's actually made in New Jersey) Our waiter brought us a complimentary bottle of traditional Ethiopian "honey wine" at the end of the meal. It tasted like vinyl siding.
