Happy Birthday to me!

Well, my birthday was Saturday, but whatever. Remember that margarita recipe I linked to here a few days ago? Well, don't do what I did: double the recipe not leaving enough room for the ice in the blender, because you end up with margarita torpedos that blast right to your head leaving you and your guests sick. Yes, only two hours into my birthday party I was hacking over the side of the bed with a mega case of the spins and our two guests, barely able to stand, hobbled outside to get a cab needing to get home and lay down themselves. I laughed about it the next day, but oh boy it was not funny at the time. Besides the lack of ice, I blamed it on being in "hostess overdrive," constantly filling glasses so nobody can keep track of how much they are drinking. So G and I had my birthday cake for breakast, a "devilish" cake from Citarella.

Other than that, the whole holiday weekend has been a wash, literally. Rainy, windy, cold, grey. The total pits. I was able to finish reading The Liars Club, which I almost put down after the first chapter. The Texas landscape wasn't resonating with me, the southern lingo was putting me off. I'm really partial to stories with a New England twinge, so this was totally foreign to me and simply wasn't speaking to me. But somewhere around page 80 it really took off for me and I was able to get past my hangup about the landscape and let the story itself shine through. Totally heartbreaking yet somehow warm at the same time. Anyone who had or was a mean older sister or had/has alcoholic parents might find resonance in this book.
