Speaking of movies that shouldn't be made, here's a movie that should be made, if it hasn't been already: a movie about college radio. I know this would only appeal or make sense to a small fraction of the population, but oh boy, to that small fraction...what a doozey. I think the model should be that opening scene from High Fidelity with Jack Black and that indie rock dweeb asking for some bizarre 7". I almost died when I saw that scene; it was so perfect. No famous people; the entire cast would have to be "authentic" college radio kids. Here is my preliminary cast of characters:
The Dueling Music Directors: "What do you mean you didn't chart Stereolab!!!???" "They get enough play! They're on fucking Elektra!!"
The Ditzy but Sweet Program Director: "How do you pronouce "Chameleons"?
The Practical Business Manager: "I realize the Beastie Boys would be a big draw for the fundraiser, but we only have enough money to pay Syrup USA."
The Laid-Back General Manager:"Party at the transmitter tonight! Wooo!"
And of course a whole host of other DJ personalities: the Sebadoh freak; the vinly freak; the weird hanger-on who's not a DJ but is always around the station; etc. etc. I'm not sure what the plot would be; perhaps something involving CMJ, or a fundraiser show. I think it should be called "On the List." Perhaps a "mockumentary" format - college radio really is just begging to be parodied. Any other suggestions out there?
