Spent the evening watching my new favorite show: New York Noise. I didn't even know Yo La Tengo made videos! The video for "Sugarcube" is so hilarious: the band is at "Rock and Roll University" and all the instructors look like members of Kiss. One of the instructors asked "Do you remember the Foghat principle?" and then writes on the chalkboard: "Every fourth album must be double live!" Ha! And now after finally hearing Interpol, I don't understand why, every time I read about them, they are compared to Joy Division - they reminded me more of Kitchens of Distinction.
Watching this show reminds me of watching "120 Minutes" on MTV when the shadowy and mysterious Dave Kendall was the host. Talk about a heyday; who can beat being 15, up at 1am on a Sunday night watching Abecedarians and Sugarcubes videos? That incarnation of "120 Minutes" seems like a dream. It's amazing anything like that was ever on MTV. At some point Dave Kendall got demoted to just counting down the "college radio top ten" and Kevin Seal took over as host. He was actually pretty funny; I liked him as host.
