Did WM and I call it or what? No baiting needed, Ian Svenonious launched right into Reagan when Weird War took the stage last night: "We Won. He's Dead. Reagan's Dead." He then went on to say something about how he wasn't really sure he was actually dead, but really a zombie. Overall, I was sorely disappointed with Weird War and pining for the days of the The Make-up, when the music had energy and purpose and conviction and just generally rocked, and not to mention the fact when they looked fucking awesome in their matching outfits and not like a bunch of Gilligan's Island rejects: Ian looked like some kind of deranged professor in a floppy black jacket with some kind of insignia on it; Alex Minoff was wearing a khaki, belted safari jacket, and Michelle Mae - Oh Michelle, what happened to you?! - was wearing a hot pink mumu, white ski-goggle glasses and a giant gold wrist cuff. The drummer just had on a boring old suit, the vest and tie landing on the floor by the end of the set. They had some kind of shtick going on, but what that was was anyone's guess. As WM noted: "He doesn't seem to be getting the response he wants." The only song I liked was the one that had a distinct Make-Up groove: If You Can't Beat 'Em, Bite 'Em.

Although I did not see The Apes, the headling band, I think it is safe to say the night belonged to Tunnel of Love, from Boston, in their black and white tights/gym shorts ensembles and long hair and bangs. We weren't even going to check them out until WM cried: "They are not even playing on the stage! We have to see this!" So we went in and sure enough they had overtaken the floor and the singer was getting up in people's faces and screaming and stomping around and rolling on the floor. It was a little scary. At one point he had a minor altercation with some guy that he was pretending to go down on. The guy kicked him twice and shoved him and seemed pretty pissed off. I wonder if it was staged...
