Saw Jandek on Corwood tonight. I was all obsessed with seeing what kind of Jandek freaks would be waiting in line for tickets on this, opening night in New York City! So I made sure we got there early and lo and behold, guess who the Jandek freaks are: us! We were the first in line, and in fact, no line ever formed! Anyway, I never knew much about Jandek until tonight. I remember playing him once on my show at WUNH and thinking, um, ok, that was good, now where's my Global Communication cd...But after seeing this I'm convinced he's a really important and fascinating musical figure, so much so that I bought the DVD and I don't even have a DVD player (or a television, or a couch, for that matter). The eeriest part was during a tape-recorded interview with him over the phone, the only interview he ever did, and the interviewer is asking him who the people are that play on some of his records and there is a nearly 15 second pause before he says something like "I don't think I should say..." and then another 10 or 15 second pause: "no...that wouldn't be right..." (or something similar), then more silence. Yikes. The director was there for a Q and A afterwards too, and mentioned how when he asked Jandek for permission to use his music in the movie, that Jandek agreed and actually sent him his entire catalog!

Latest Jandek news: he played his first ever live show, in Scotland, in October.
