I think the "Active Fruit Concentrates" in my Garnier "Fortifying Shampoo" went rancid! It smells horrible, like a bowl of moldy fruit salad. I've used almost half the bottle, and all of a sudden it stinks. So weird. I was ready for some new shampoo anyway, as like with all shampoo, my hair was no longer responding to the Garnier. So I think I'll pick up some Redken All Soft at the Regis near my office, as we get a 20% corporate discount there.
And now for a trip down Shampoo Memory Lane...
The first shampoo I remember using is Agree. This packaging looks nothing how I remember it, just a big green bottle with not much else on it except the word "Agree."
At summer camp it was Pert Plus. Talk about being instantly transported back in time. One whiff of this stuff and I'm 13 again, trudging up a wood-chip covered hill at 6:30am in my flip-flops and giant hooded sweatshirt, bath bucket in hand, the promise of "bug juice" and pancakes in the dining hall propelling me through a chilly early morning shower.
In high school, I don't really remember what we used regularly, although I think this was about the time The Body Shop hit the scene and I do remember using their Banana Shampoo.
Then it was off to Hampshire College were I started using all sorts of hippie products, like Nature's Gate Herbal Shampoo and Conditioner. It's quite a feat to create a shampoo that makes your hair feel dirtier than before you shampooed it, but Nature's Gate has succeeded. Bravo!
Fast forward a bit to New York City 2000, where I suddenly found myself strolling past Aveda salons and Origins stores on a regular basis. This led me to try Shampure and No Deposit, both of which I loved, especially the No Deposit, but alas, my hair stopped responding to them (and my wallet rebelled against them).
So then it was onto Dove Beautifully Clean which I liked, but I felt like it stopped working halfway through the bottle, so on it was to Garnier.
I'd really like to try Phyto, but this stuff is beaucoup bucks. They have little sample bottles at my hairdressers for $8! Might as well just buy a whole bottle for $20 at that price.

I think my first was Prell. It was bright green and came in a tube. When I was a poor college student it was Suave, which just kills your hair. Now I use American Crew, alternated with whatever Mary gets (which at the moment is a Trader Joe's brand -- not bad).
Head and Shoulders give me summer camp flashbacks (William Lawrence in Wolfeboro).
You went to Billy Larry??!! We might have danced together! I know we had dances with Robin Hood, which was on the same lake as Huckins (Lake Osipee).
Suave is THE WORST!!
