Adam Gopnik's hilarious and poignent essay Bumping into Mr. Ravioli has inspired the play Mr. Marmalade. The essay originally appeared in the September 2002 issue of The New Yorker, and has since been reprinted in the Best American Essays 2003. They've changed the setting from Manhattan to suburban New Jersey, however, and obviously they have changed the name of the title character, who is literally a character: an imaginary friend of the little girl in the story. The little girl emulates her parents busy-ness by inventing an imaginary friend who never has time to play with her. Definitely going to try and check this out, although I have a feeling it's probably not as good as the essay.
