Probably the only perk for people in publishing who aren't the CEO with $8 billion in stock options is free books. I'm on a mailing list that sends a comp copy my way every few months or so. Usually they suck, but today I scored big: The Amazing Mackerel Pudding Plan by Wendy McClure, which is a collection of Weight Watchers recipe cards from the 1970s, with commentary by McClure. Oh, the hideousness. Chilled Celery Log, Tuna Puff, Molded Cheese Souffle...my only thought upon flipping through this ghastly collection of stomach-churning foodstuffs: Thank God for Julia Child. McClure's commentary is hilarious, and the photographs of the food are just beyond anything you could ever imagine - truly the stuff of nightmares. I hope she tracks down the authors of these recipes and does a follow-up book on what kind of thought process could have ever put forth the Jellied Tomato Refresher.

Didn't you send these receipes out on a web site a couple years ago? I feel like that was in your early days of blogging. I totally forgot about them! They are so funny. Good to see they are in book form. Although less free than the web site...(at least for those of us not in publishing!)
