MALE MANNEQUIN BOOKSHELF

Drugs Are Nice: A Post-Punk Memoir by Lisa Carver.

All I knew about Lisa Carver before picking this book up was that she was a New Hampshire native famous for her zine Rollerderby and her scandalous performances with her band Suckdog. Upon finishing this book in four days flat, I now know that Lisa Carver is a brilliant, inspiring, and above all, brave woman who survived an abusive relationship while continuing to make art and care for her young child. And to top it all off, she is hilarious! I knew she was funny from Rollerderby, but her sense of humour really shines in Drugs Are Nice. At one point she describes herself as feeling like an "uncooked pancake." Ha! And her liberal use of exclamation points is...umm...I don't know but it works and I like it. My favorite line:

Yet suddenly I am under the impression that everything in the world is easy, and most people simply don't understand that, and that is why they don't do much - because they mistakenly believe things are hard.

So true! Read this book! You will be entertained and engrossed from page 1. People familiar with seacoast NH will especially find the area references amusing.
