There were two police officers at the 23rd St. PATH station this morning, which is unusual. When the train pulled into the 9th St. station, a man in a flak helmet and black uniform holding a machine gun got on the train and looked around, then got off. I am now thinking to myself: "What the fuck?" In Hoboken, there were more cops than usual checking bags, and one of those giant mobile units was parked outside. I get into work and immediately go to the New York Times and see this article: PATH Tunnels Seen as Fragile in Bomb Attack.
It never fails: the inevitable holiday/election time terrorism-related story.
When I moved back to Brooklyn I was fully aware that I was now commuting under two rivers (East and Hudson) to get to work, which in this age of terrorism was very unsettling. I changed my hours to 8:15-4:15 which allows me to miss the real commuter rush, which I feel like is when something would happen if it was going to happen.
When my co-worker got in, he said the PATH tunnel between New York and Hoboken had been closed and all the trains were getting rerouted to the Pavonia Newport station in Jersey City. He said it was like a "military state" at Pavonia Newport, with the bomb sniffing dogs and the military guys with machine guns. A woman started having a panic attack and said "I can't live like this anymore!" so my coworker gave her a Klonopin. Ha! The generosity of strangers is just about the only upside to these situations.
