Checked out The Nomi Song last night. What a character. Can't say I'm a fan of his new-wave/opera hybrid; his supersonic falsetto had me climbing the walls by the time the credits were rolling. The documentary itself sucked (no dates, no context), but quite an interesting story. Didn't seem like they were able to find many people to talk about him, but they did track down JJ French of Twisted Sister, whom Nomi opened for in New Jersey. The best quote of the film came when someone was talking about how they took the Nomi show on the road and that "our biggest test came in New Jersey." Of course it did! Apparently the midwest loved him, but blue-collar Jersey metal fans went ballistic and the show was a nightmare. Nomi didn't speak to his band mates for two days afterwards. Before the show JJ French introduced himself to Nomi because he didn't know anything about him and wanted to see what his deal was, which I thought was very nice of him! After a minimal response from Nomi, French recalled thinking: "Wow, this guy is a real artist." Some great Twisted Sister footage too. Although it was an overall lousy film, I recommend it because it's probably the only film about Nomi, and if you are interested in the history of new wave music you'll want to see it.
